Stratforgate: WikiLeaks releases ‘shadow CIA’ mail

Whistleblower website WikiLeaks has exposed more than 5 million emails apparently obtained by the hacking of Stratfor, the private intelligence company dubbed the “shadow CIA”. The leak may be as high-profile as that of the State Department cables.

Study says Mayan civilization was wiped out by drought

A recent study has suggested that the conditions caused by a mild drought might have been the reason for the collapse of the Mayan civilization.

The research published in the journal Nature says a continuous 25 to 40 percent drop in rainfall reduced water supplies in the homeland of the ancient Maya civilization located in what is now southern Mexico and Guatemala. Read more.

Clouds are at the Lowest Levels of Past Decade

Washington, Feb 25 (Prensa Latina) New Zealand scientists discovered that terrestrial clouds are at the lowest level of the last decade, which may have implications for global climate, highlights an article published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

Using satellite observations and measurements specialists at the University of Auckland found that in 10 years the clouds "dropped" from 30 to 40 meters. Read more.

BP oil spill trial delayed a week

NEW ORLEANS — The BP trial in New Orleans to determine how much the British energy giant owes for the massive 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill has been delayed a week to allow for more settlement talks, a court order said Sunday.

The blockbuster trial, in which tens of billion of dollars are at stake, and in which a federal judge will rule on whether deadly missteps constitute gross negligence leading up to the spill, had been due to start Monday. Read more.

Syria referendum goes ahead amid military onslaught

(Reuters) - At least 59 Syrian civilians and soldiers were killed on Sunday in bloodshed that coincided with a vote on a new constitution that could keep President Bashar al-Assad in power until 2028.

Assad says the referendum shows his commitment to democratic reform while Western powers and Syrians involved in an 11-month-old revolt against his rule have described it as a farce. Read more + video.

Libyan investigation into tribal warfare



Two weeks of fighting between rival tribes in a remote corner of Libya has killed dozens of people. The shooting broke out in the southeastern town of Kufra, close to Libya's border with Chad and Sudan.

Government representatives and troops are now in the region trying to negotiate a ceasefire. Al Jazeera's Nicole Johnston reports from Tripoli.

99-percenters rally in Oakland against police brutality

Anti-corporate protesters in the United States, the 99-percenters, have once again taken to the streets in the port city of Oakland to protest against police crackdown on the protests.
